Isola was a historical Roman port and village called Haliaetum and was initially standing to the south west from the existing area since the 2nd century BC. Izola (Isola d'Istria) is an old fishing town on the coast of the Adriatic Sea. Izola (Isola d'Istria) er en gammel fiskelandsby på kysten av Adriaterhavet. The town of Koper was built on an island which was linked to the mainland in the 19th century by embankments.
