Bovec, in the gorgeous Soca Valley, is a town rebuilt after WWII. It has an uncommon lift structure including a three stage gondola up to the Kanin ski location on the Italian border. Kanin is the only ski vacation resort in Slovenia where the skiing environment extend above 2000 meters.
The Bovec zone is one huge natural monument. A substantial part of the municipality is placed inside of Triglav National Park, with a modern, well-equipped and extremely useful information center in the legendary Trenta valley. The source of the river Soca, the single most wonderful rivers in Europe, is in the Bovec region. Delightful little lakes lie in the mountains around Bovec, home of the gold-horned ibex; at Kaninski Podi one can find potholes up to 1000 m deep, one of the deepest in the world. The Boka waterfall, which is 106 metres high, is only one of a multitude hidden in the deep Alpine valleys.
There’s a rich historic heritage to be found out at every step; the peace and quiet of the small church buildings, the awe-inspiring fort of Kluže standing tall over the torrential Koritnica, and the remains of First World War positions which might be an eternal memory of that senseless slaughter. In the town itself one can appreciate the beauty and originality of the countryside architecture – the typical houses of the area and their surroundings, sensitively joining with the surroundings, as well as the old farms in the mountain valleys positioned as a monument to endurance and perseverance and to the energy of the local people.
